1494-1519. Spanish Navigator. A ccording to meager historical references, Captain Alonso Alvarez de Piñeda's life was short but exceedingly eventful and productive. The only actual mention of his date of birth appears in a biography of his immediate superior, Francisco de Garay.
In 1519, Spanish explorer and map-maker Alonso Álvarez de Pineda led an Spanish expedition that, for the first time, mapped the coast of Texas along the Gulf of Mexico. From this expedition and the ones that followed, Spain claimed the area of present-day Texas as part of their territory.
In 1519, the explorer Alonso Álvarez de Piñeda became the first European to map the Texas Gulf Coast. However, it would be another nine years before any Spaniards explored the Texas interior. In 1528, another expedition, led by Pánfilo de Narváez, set sail from Spain to explore the North American interior.
Alonso Álvarez de Pineda ( Spanish: [piˈneða]; 1494–1520) was a Spanish conquistador and cartographer who was the first to prove the insularity of the Gulf of Mexico by sailing around its coast.
But it was a lesser known and less-fabled explorer, Alonso Alvarez de Piñeda (d. 1520), who first sailed the entire Gulf of Mexico coastline, spotting the Mississippi River and confirming that Florida was not an island, as was previously believed.
