- 1:47Former mayor of Taipei Ko Wen-je arrested in graft probeReuters VideosSTORY: Taiwanese authorities arrested former mayor of Taipei Ko Wen-je early Saturday... ...as part of a graft probe of a major property development in the Taiwanese capital. The case involves approvals given for a property project when he was mayor, from 2014 to 2022. He's denied wrongdoing and the Taiwan People's Party which he heads, in a statement Saturday said it "calls on the court to carefully examine the legality of the arrest procedure during the arraignment process, and to return justice to Chairman Ko Wen-je as he deserves". Ko came third in January's presidential election heading the opposition TPP. He founded the party in 2019, in a bid to break the traditional two-party mould in Taiwan between the ruling Democratic Progressive Party and the Kuomintang. Ko's TPP won passionate support especially among young people, for putting issues like the high cost of housing and low wages at the centre of his campaign. But they've been hit by other scandals recently... ... just weeks ago, they acknowledged misreporting campaign funds during the presidential race. Ko said he would step down temporarily as party chairman, as that case was under investigation and apologized to his supporters. Even as Taiwan media widely expects Ko to seek the presidency again at the next election in 2028, opinion polls show the scandals have hammered support for him and his party. People have also taken to the streets this year to march against legislative reforms, pushed through jointly by the TPP and KMT, to give lawmakers greater oversight power to question officials, military figures or citizens, criminalize contempt of parliament by government officials, and require the president to give regular reports to parliament and answer lawmakers' questions, which would be a first for Taiwan.2 days ago

Trump often refers to Harris as "comrade", "crazy", or "Kamabla." Opinion polls show Trump has lost ground with women voters since Vice President Kamala Harris became the Democratic candidate in the Nov. 5 election. Harris led Trump by 49% to 36% - or 13 percentage points - among women voters in a Reuters/Ipsos poll published on Thursday (August 29), compared to her 9-point lead in polls conducted in July.2 days ago

- 1:53Maduro government blames power outage on sabotageReuters VideosSTORY: Much of Venezuela was plunged into darkness on Friday, after a major power outage. President Nicolas Maduro's government blamed the widespread blackout on sabotage by the opposition party. But it provided no evidence of a deliberate attack. In the capital Caracas, many residents were not buying the Maduro government's claims. Efigenia Benitez is one of them. "Maduro is comfortable in his government palace. The ones paying the price are our businesses, customers, our homes. When the power comes back all of our appliances will be damaged. And who pays for it? No one." Francisco Mendez blamed the Venezuelan authorities. "The possibility of a power outage happening was announced weeks ago and the necessary precautions were not taken regarding the upkeep of the country’s electrical system." Work was interrupted at Venezuela’s major oil terminal… and the metro system in Caracas was ground to a halt. Many people waited on the street for the power to come back on, unaware of the root cause of the blackout. President Nicolas Maduro, who is locked in a dispute with the opposition over the outcome of a July presidential election, often blames (quote) "attacks" on the power grid on his political rivals. The opposition has always denied involvement. The electoral authority and Supreme Court have backed Maduro’s claim that he won re-election, even though authorities have not released full vote tallies. Meanwhile, arrests of opposition figures have risen sharply over the last week. A third citation was issued for former opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez to testify about his party’s vote tally claims. But it was unclear if it remained valid amid the blackout.2 days ago
- 1:41Germany resumes Afghan deportations as elections loomReuters VideosSTORY: German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Friday (August 30) said his country had resumed sending flights of Afghan citizens convicted of crimes back to their home country. A post on social media by the nation's interior minister said Germany on Friday deported 28 criminals to Afghanistan. Berlin had halted returning people to Kabul due to human rights concerns after the Taliban retook power in 2021. But pressure mounted on Scholz's coalition government to reverse that suspension after a fatal stabbing in the city of Solingen linked to Islamic State at a festival last week. At a memorial for the victims, Scholz vowed to step up deportations. The government on Thursday (August 29) introduced a package of measures to tighten asylum policy and speed up removals. The resumption comes ahead of regional elections in two eastern states where migration is a crucial campaign issue. The far-right and anti-migrant Alternative for Germany, or AfD, is leading in the polls in Thuringia with 30% support, nearly ten points ahead of the conservatives in second-place. And is tying with them in Saxony on around 30%. The 11-year-old AfD is unlikely to be able to form a state government even if it does win, as it is polling short of a majority and other parties refuse to collaborate with it. But it will be the first time a far-right party has the most seats in a German state parliament since the Second World War. Bjoern Hoecke leads the AfD in Thuringia. He has twice been fined by German authorities for using a slogan linked to the Nazi party. And his opponents have emphasized that comparison.3 days ago

Hold on. Hold up for a second. Hold up for a second. Let me just say something. Let me just say something. We are fighting for a democracy. Everyone has a right and should have their voices heard. I am speaking now, but on the subject. I will say this, the President and I are working around the clock. We've got to get a hostage deal done and get a ceasefire done now." Addressing a crowd in Savannah, Georgia, Harris told her supporters not to pay "too much attention to the polls" and keep her "underdog" status. Harris leads Republican Donald Trump 45% to 41% in a Reuters/Ipsos poll published on Thursday that showed the vice president sparking new enthusiasm among voters and shaking up the race ahead of the Nov. 5 election. - 0:36UK's Starmer supports tougher outdoor smoking rulesReuters VideosSTORY: :: Britain's Starmer says he supports the idea of banning smoking in some outdoor spaces :: August 29, 2024 :: Keir Starmer, British Prime Minister "My starting point on this is to remind everyone that over 80,000 people lose their lives every year because of smoking. That's a preventable death. It's a huge burden on the NHS and of course it's a burden on the taxpayer. So yes, we are going to take decisions in this space." // "I think it's important to get the balance right, but everybody watching this who uses the NHS will know that it's on its knees. We have to relieve the burden and that's why I spoke before the election about moving to a preventative model when it comes to health." The British government is considering a smoking ban in pub and restaurant gardens and terraces, outdoor sports stadiums, children's parks and pavements near hospitals and universities, according to documents seen by The Sun newspaper. Britain banned smoking in almost all enclosed public spaces, including bars and workplaces, in 2007.3 days ago

- 0:35Harris-Walz Georgia bus tour kicks off with high school visitReuters VideosSTORY: :: Kamala Harris and running mate Tim Walz begin their Georgia bus tour at a high school :: August 28, 2024 :: Hinesville, Georgia "You never let any circumstance knock you down or slow you down. You just keep going at it. That's who you are. And that's why we are so confident in everything that you are doing and will continue to do for our country. So just keep being you and all of the excellence that you're bringing to everything you do." Harris, 59, pledged then that Democrats will win the state, which has 16 Electoral College votes and is one of several swing states that can lean either to Republicans or Democrats. Democrats won it by less than 12,000 votes in 2020. Republicans have dramatically ramped up spending in Georgia and the Republican-controlled state election board added a new rule that voting rights advocates say could delay certification of the vote in November. Trump, 78, said in a social media post last week that winning Georgia "is so important to the success of our Party, and most importantly, our Country." He is expected to campaign in the state several more times before Election Day on Nov. 5.4 days ago
