Mary Emily Postlethwaite, spinster, of Bryn Tavy Cottage, Mary Tavy, Devon, died on 30th March 1933, aged 78. Probate went to her younger sister, Elinor Postlethwaite, and her nephew, Paul Postlethwaite, an army lieutenant.
Biographical Text. Born in 1856 in Hertfordshire Mary was one of at least 6 children of Thomas Postlethwaite, a farmer and later slate merchant, and his wife also named Mary. Both Mary and her sisters set their mind to becoming artists and in 1880, Mary became a student at Derby School of Art (Derby was her mother’s hometown).
Sep 1, 2014 · Mary Postlethwaite was an eccentric, highly intelligent local woman of a prominent family who dressed and behaved like what is referred to in our coarse modern vernacular as a “bag lady.” Although her appearance was off-putting, her encyclopedic knowledge of Natchez history garnered respect from anyone who dared strike up a conversation.
