Mar 22, 2016 · George Arden received a special honour at Sunrise Village this month for his service in the Second World War. Arden, 94, was the recipient of the Knight of the French National Order of the Legion of Honour. It is France's highest honour, bestowed on veterans who helped liberate the country during the Second World War.
Arden, George (1820-1854) Arrived in Melbourne, January 1838. A fortnight later launched the weekly “Port Phillip Gazette”, the first legalised journal in Port Phillip. January 1839, published, and probably wrote, the first original poem on Melbourne to be printed there.
George Arden migrated to New South Wales in early 1838. After spending some months in Sydney, he moved to Melbourne where he formed a partnership with Thomas Strode (q.v.) and established the Port Phillip Gazette.
