Gary Wilson is a major character in Broadside Beach, debuting in The Wonderful World of StudioGrounds. He was a mascot handler at Broadside Beach and a later voice actor for Giovanni Goose in SHIPWRECKED 64.
Gary Wilson worked as a mascot handler at Broadside Beach, being assigned the role to wear the Giovanni Goose costume. One evening at the end of his shift, he stumbled out of his costume, famished, and found himself wandering into the kitchen afterhours to get himself something to eat. Gary would be forced into an encounter with the Starling counterpart of Brandon Lester, and was declared deceased on January 3, 1990.
Backstory
Gary Wilson was born on 1964. At an unknown point in his adulthood, he was appointed the role of the voice behind Giovanni Goose, the cranky yet talented chef. Eventually, after the opening of Broadside Beach, Gary located to the resort for unknown motivations and worked as a mascot handler. One day, after a long shift as the actor for Giovanni Goose, Gary Wilson would enter Broadside Beach Staff Kitchen. As he wandered around the kitchen, Gary was unexpectedly confronted by his "visitor" Brandon Lester, the first public Starling after Rex Broadside. With the two alone, Brandon violently attacked Gary, slamming his face repeatedly into a cabinet. Afterward, Brandon found the deep fat fryer that was still boiling, and he proceeded to dunk Gary's face into the scalding pot. Gary quickly lost consciousness. Gary was pronounced dead on January 3, 1990 That following morning, Gary's deceased body was discovered, his face still smoldering from the fryer and his back contorted in an unnatural manner, implied by StudioGrounds Innovative Laboratory to "seemingly be broken". Tragically, Gary's death was one of three such incidents reported at Broadside Beach.
Giovanni Goose
Due to the collective deaths of Olivia Finch, Nathan Stewart, and Gary Wilson, it was Broadside Animation's best interest in closing Broadside Beach. During the time where Studiogrounds, Broadside Animation's new theme-park, was being created, a branch of Broadside Animation titled "StudioGrounds Innovative Laboratory" would be reinstated with the intentions of reviving the three employees. Previously, the project was intended to revive Rex Broadside, the founder of Broadside Animation, in an attempt to further compete with Disney. Labeling the new, refined bodies as "Starlings", Broadside Animation would use an unknown flesh-like mineral which was located on Broadside Beach, previously known as Nulla Terra. These minerals would be found in open caves deep under Nulla Terra, these caves being labeled as "Stitchcaves" by employees. As a result of the minerals having a pulsating effect and a desire to spread to another organism, it was determined that the best way to experiment with them was without skin. This breakthrough led to the creation of the Starlings, with the bodies of three deceased employees being used to bring them to life in an effort to avoid a public outcry. These new Starling models were integrated into Studiogrounds as aimless attractions. However, following The Great Stampede incident at Studiogrounds, the theme park was shut down, and Gary and the remaining Starlings were relocated back to Nulla Terra due to them being considered immortal in nature. Due to them being trapped on the island, the four would collectively form into a mass of flesh which begged for freedom, liberation, and happiness. When given the opportunity to leave, this mass of flesh would split into two organisms. These two organisms, while unnamed, are heavily implied to be Vandal and Husk.
SHIPWRECKED 64
Upon Broadside Animation's CEO Mark Mullins decision to further cease funding the creation of SHIPWRECKED, a game being created by indie development team Cogware Games, the founder of Cogware Connor Thomas would go on a rampage and continue to develop the game with malicious purposes. Prior to the games cancellation, it is heavily implied that the Starlings tampered with a flash drive consisting of a presentation which Connor was in possession of. When he opened this flash drive, he was shortly subjected to old coverups relating to the three deaths which occurred at Broadside Beach hidden alongside old cartoons created by Rex Broadside. With these files in hand, he would scatter them all across the game and could be unlocked by intentionally failing the characters levels. The game would be cut into five layers which shifted the games focus from the threatening volcano on Nulla Terra to fleeing from realistic, antagonistic recreations of each Starling, including Gary Wilson as Giovanni Goose.
Giovanni's Kitchen
Within the 1997 version of SHIPWRECKED 64, players can discover a glitch in Giovanni's Kitchen after failing Olive's Garden. By using the middle wall in the center of the kitchen to execute a leap and wall-jump, they can access a secret room where a third collectible can be found in a chest. Walking towards another glitched wall results in the player falling out the map, locating a hidden easter egg consisting of the Giovanni Goose Nintendo 64 model unconscious as his head burns on a burning stove, mimicking Gary's death. When Bucky meets eyes with Giovanni's body, he states "Nothing was left when they found him." before the minigame eventually concludes.
Dweller
During the runtime of SHIPWRECKED 64, players can also find Gary Wilson's Dweller counterpart. Gary can first be located after unlocking The Gate, which later leads to The Plaza. Like the other Dwellers, Gary possesses a unique ability. In the game, Gary Wilson is programmed to be reactive toward sound. If the player plays one of the many Audio Logs in The Plaza, Giovanni Goose will manifest and rush towards the audio source. Gary's hearing abilities have no bounds, as he will pursue sounds even in the most secluded areas within The Plaza. This aspect can be manipulated by players, especially with strategically placed Audio Logs. Additionally, similar to Olivia Finch, Gary possesses the ability to leap off platforms. After jumpscaring the player, the Starling Giovanni Goose can be seen standing in front of the camera as their face slowly distorts, representing Gary's twisted appearance after being found in the Broadside Beach Staff Kitchen.
•While Gary Wilson has an established autopsy photo which makes appearances in SHIPWRECKED 64, in the StudioGrounds Innovative Laboratory video, it depicts an entirely new autopsy photo.
•In Gary Wilson's Starling Application Form, the name "Tiffany Waters" is written. Interestingly, the surname "Waters" can additionally be seen with one of Cogware Games' three founders: Harry Waters. Their relationship is unknown.
