Bennett was born in Australia but primarily grew up in Sheffield, England. At the age of nine, his family moved to New Zealand where Bennett has resided since. He graduated from Victoria University of Wellington with a degree in theatre and English. Bennett announced that Cosmic Furymarked the end of his obligatory contract with Hasbro.
