Born in San Ferdinando di Puglia, the son and grandson of lawyers, Di Leo (1932-2003) discovered noir fiction as a teenager—André Gide’s admiration for Dashiell Hammett led him to the nihilistic Red Harvest. Film noir came later with the American movies that flooded Italy after World War II. Di Leo dutifully studied law, but his heart wasn’t in it.
