Sir Edward Elgar. Recorded between 1914 and 1925. MUSIC & ARTS CD1257 (4 CDs) These very first recordings of the music of Edward Elgar have been released before on compact disc – on a five-disc set from Pearl (long since unavailable) with one or two items on issues from Pristine and Dutton.
It is, in many ways, the apotheosis of Elgar’s career in the studios thus far, and prefigures the glories enshrined in the electrical legacy to come. This is an impressive box. The booklet is 35 pages long and includes year-by-year session commentary by Andrew Neill.
