Mario's next big-screen leap is just around the corner, and more creatives involved with the project are praising Chris Pratt's performance despite fan apprehensions.

"He's really good at playing a blue-collar hero with a ton of heart," Horvath told Total Film. "For the way that Mario is characterized in our film, he's perfect for it."

Horvath isn't the first on the project to defend Pratt's role as Mario, with producer Chris Meledandri speaking to fan criticisms on multiple occasions. Meledandri acknowledged concerns over Pratt using an Italian accent, later adding: "When people hear Chris Pratt’s performance, the criticism will evaporate."

Fans got their first look at the Mario animated movie last October, and though they seemed fond of the plumber's big-screen adventure, Pratt's voice was another story. After the actor described his performance as "unlike anything you've ever heard in the Mario world before," Twitter lit up with fans pointing out that's just Pratt's normal speaking voice.

Skepticism began long before the Mario footage revealed Pratt's voice for the role, with plenty questioning why long-time voice actor for the character Charles Martinet didn't get the job. The film is set to host cameos from Martinet, and the actor clearly remains endeared to the role, once stating he wishes to "voice Mario until I drop dead."

The final product isn't far off and just moved its release date up by two days. The Super Mario Bros. Movie premieres on April 5 in the US, following up with a Japan debut April 28. Until then, you can check out IGN's breakdown on easter eggs from the second Mario trailer, and make plans for the movie-focused Nintendo Direct on March 9.
