The song is named in tribute to the bass player Paul Chambers, [1] who had accompanied Coltrane for years. It first appeared on the album Giant Steps where it was played with a fast swing feel. [2]

The Significance of “Mr. P.C.”. The title of the song, “Mr. P.C.,” has a fascinating story behind it. P.C. stands for Paul Chambers, the bassist in Coltrane’s band during the recording of “Giant Steps.”. Chambers was known for his impeccable technique and innovative bass lines.
History. “Mr. P.C.,” a jazz classic, first appeared on John Coltrane ’s debut record Giant Steps. This song and most of Giant Steps come from recording sessions in the spring of 1959 while John Coltrane was still a member of the Miles Davis Quintet, but had recently signed his own first major recording contract with Atlantic Records.
