Alphonzo Bell. Alphonzo Edward Bell Sr. (September 29, 1875 – December 27, 1947) was an American oil multi-millionaire, real estate developer, philanthropist, and champion tennis player. The westside Los Angeles residential community of Bel Air is named after him, as well as the Southern California communities of Bell and Bell Gardens. [1]
Alphonzo Edward Bell Jr. (September 19, 1914 – April 25, 2004) was a Republican United States Representative from California. Bell represented Malibu and the influential Westside region of Los Angeles for eight terms, from 1961 to 1977.
Alphonzo Bell graduated from Occidental College in Los Angeles in 1895 and then studied at the San Francisco Theological Seminary for two years. In 1897 he entered into the first of his many real estate deals and, as a result of oil being found on one of his properties in 1922, he became an immensely wealthy man.
