The daughter of a British army officer, Valerie Hobson was born in Larne, County Antrim, Ireland (now Northern Ireland ), in 1917. She attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art to study dance but dropped out after an attack of scarlet fever. Instead, she opted for the theater and made her debut on the London stage and screen as a teenager.
