Awards and recognition. Malden won the 1951 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for A Streetcar Named Desire and was nominated in 1954 for his supporting role in On the Waterfront. Malden was president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences from 1989 to 1992.
May 10, 2024 · While performing in New York in 1946, Malden met Brando and director Elia Kazan. Malden’s career took off after Kazan cast him as the naive suitor, Mitch, in Streetcar on Broadway and in the screen adaptation, a role that won him an Academy Award for best supporting actor (1951).
