LisaRaye McCoy was born in Chicago, Illinois, in US, on September 23, 1967. Her father was David Ray McCoy, a businessman, and her mother was Katie McCoy, a model. She grew up in the south side of Chicago, where she attended St. James College Prep, Kenwood Academy and later Thornridge High School, from where she graduated in 1985.
