Fort Massachusetts was a pleasant surprise on our trip to Ship Island...and it is also a nice shady relief from the sun, after being down at the beach for a while. The solid fort is from the 1800's and has a lot of neat design elements...and it's cool to see the interior arch designs as you walk through the structure.

Started in 1859, its construction by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers was hindered by the harsh environment, hurricanes, yellow fever epidemics, and the Civil War. Local Confederate militia held the island and the uncompleted fort for 9 months in 1861.
