Ferdinand Anton Ernst Porsche (19 September 1909 – 27 March 1998), [1] mainly known as Ferry Porsche, was an Austrian-German technical automobile designer and automaker - entrepreneur. He operated Porsche AG in Stuttgart, Germany.
Ferry Porsche founded the company’s global reputation as a producer of successful sports and racing cars in 1948. In doing so, he used the same design principles that his father applied with the Volkswagen (air-cooled horizontally opposed engine in rear), and, at the same time, upheld the racing tradition that his father started. His son Ferry, the founder of today’s company and the father of Wolfgang Porsche, had discovered the farmstead back in the 1930s while driving through the mountains. The area around the Großglockner, Austria’s highest peak, is an ideal place for test-drives and tours of discovery.
As Porsche became more involved with the construction of the Wolfsburg factory, he handed over his racing projects to his son, Ferry. The dominance of the Silver Arrows of both brands was only stopped by the outbreak of World War II in 1939.
On the basis of the Beetle design, the first sports car to bear the Porsche name was created in Austria, in the Malta Valley in Carinthia. In 1948 Ferry presented a car, bearing the design number 356, that was later to become the foundation for Porsche's legendary reputation.
One of Porsche's greatest claims to fame was his involvement on the prototype Volkswagen ("VW"), meaning "people's car" in German. The first model had its debut run in 1936, and two years later, the first VW plant was built.
