The city's population is 63,162 (1 January 2023) and the municipality's population is 96,480 (as of 1 January 2023 ), making it the 7th largest city in Denmark.

Founded in the 11th or 12th century, Horsens was a fortified town with several monasteries. The port received its first market charter in 1442 and had become a commercial centre by the 18th century.
