The North German Lloyd Line (NGL) was founded in 1857 by the amalgamation of four smaller companies. They commenced operations between Bremen and London with six 500 ton steamers. Transatlantic voyages to New York started in June, 1858; Baltimore in March, 1868; and in 1869 regular sailings commenced to New Orleans.

The company runs many lines from its headquarters at Bremen; among them are those to New York - a line of express steamers and a line of ordinary mail steamers, all calling at Southampton or Cherbourg.
The vast majority traveled on North German Lloyd ships departing from Bremerhaven, while the rest embarked at Hamburg, Antwerp, or Liverpool. According to the Baltimore’s manifest or passenger list, twenty six of the 141 passengers were children under ten, all traveling with adult family members.
The North German Lloyd, whose vessels now unite the four corners of the globe, was founded in 1857, exactly ten years after the period when, for the first time, a steamer, the SS Washington, had crossed the Atlantic on her voyage from Bremen to New York.
