An assistant cameraman from the early 1920s, he became a cinematographer in the 1940s and soon was working on Hollywood productions, mostly at 20th Century Fox.
Joseph MacDonald was a versatile and award-nominated cinematographer who worked on films noir, westerns, musicals and more. He also acted in two movies, Romance of the Rio Grande and Arizona, under the name Joe MacDonald.
