Erich Karl Heinrich Kettelhut (1 November 1893 – 13 March 1979) was a German production designer, art director and set decorator. Kettelhut is considered one of the most important artists in the history of early German cinema, mainly for his set direction for Die Nibelungen (1924) and his design and visual effects for Metropolis (1927).
The production designer, art director and set designer Erich Kettelhut worked together with artists Otto Hunte and Karl Vollbrecht to design the impressive Metropolis cityscape and interiors. Kettelhut’s sketches show how the style of Art Deco inspired the team and found its way into the film’s design.

Otto Hunte, art director and production designer, led Lang’s team of set designers, which included Karl Vollbrecht, who was recognised as “film architect,” and Erich Kettelhut. Lang and Hunte enlisted the help of cinematographer Eugen Schüfftan, who devised a method for projecting Metropolis actors into small sets using mirrors.
