The Teatro Real (Royal Theatre) is an opera house in Madrid, Spain. Located at the Plaza de Oriente, opposite the Royal Palace, and known colloquially as El Real, it is considered the top institution of the performing and musical arts in the country and one of the most prestigious opera houses in Europe.
The Teatro Real is considered the leading institution of the performing arts in Spain, the foremost national opera house and one of the most important Spanish cultural institutions. The theatre also enjoys significant international prestige.
In 1977 it was declared a National Monument and in 1997, after 7 years of extensive works, the Teatro Real once again became home to Madrid’s opera scene. The building displays a combination of architectural styles. The theatre’s crown jewel, however, is its 1,472 m² stage area.
Located very close to the Puerta del Sol, the Teatro Real in Madrid is one of the leading theatres in the world. In recent years, it has received numerous awards, including the International Opera Award for Best Opera House. It opened in 1850, and became one of the main European theatres.
