The eldest son of Dr. John Rutledge and Sarah Hext, John Rutledge studied law with his uncle Andrew Rutledge and with James Parsons in Charleston before attending the Middle Temple in London. He received his early education from his father, an Irish immigrant and physician, and from an Anglican minister and a tutor.
