The museum houses historical artifacts of Litchfield and showcases Litchfield's relationship with Route 66. Open Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm and 1-4 on Sunday. Closed Mondays during November-March.
According to the 1928 Illinois State Road Map, Route 4 was shown as “Temporary Route 66” and Route 66 was completed as far north as Litchfield with construction continuing to Springfield. Litchfield is unique in that the four-lane Route 66 [1940-1977] ran to the west of Historic Route 66 [1930-1940] through Litchfield.
Our Historic Route 66 display features Bob Waldmire maps and drawings, an original Route 66 road sign, a gas pump, an old automobile and much more, including a flip-chart with pictures, then and now, of businesses along this area of the “Mother Road.”
