Overview. The Sutter Buttes have been dubbed by many “The Smallest Mountain Range in the World.”. They are of volcanic origins, and are a geologic anomaly in that they are only 10 miles in approximate diameter. It is actually a cluster of peaks, of which the North, South, & West Buttes have the most prominence.

Photo By: Paula Schulz. The Sutter Buttes, formerly known as the Marysville Buttes, are a small circular complex of eroded volcanic lava domes rising as buttes above the flat plains of the Central Valley just outside Yuba City. The highest peak, South Butte, reaches about 2,130 feet.
The highest of the three peaks is 2,132 feet above sea level. The Buttes are mostly private property, and access is available in the spring and fall through guided tours with Middle Mountain Interpretive Hikes. Signs along Hwy 20 will direct you to a scenic drive tour. The Sutter Buttes are the only mountain range you can circle in a day.
