Dec 1, 2021 · On May 8, 1978, Reinhold Messner and his Tyrolean countryman Peter Habeler were the first ever to reach the top of Earth’s highest mountain — Mount Everest, 8,848 meters (29,029 feet) above sea level — without supplemental oxygen; Messner and Habeler are greeted by their wives at Munich-Riem Airport.
REINHOLD MESSNER is often called the greatest living mountaineer. He was the first man to summit Everest without supplementary oxygen, the first to solo Everest, and the first to climb all fourteen of the world's 8,000-meter peaks.
