During World War II, Rachel Cade (Angie Dickinson) works as a doctor at a small medical station in the Congo, where she quickly draws the ire of both the local witch doctor (Woody Strode) and the tribal chief (Juano Hernandez). Just as Rachel begins to feel overwhelmed by the needs of the villagers and by her boss, Henri Derode (Peter Finch), she meets Paul (Roger Moore), a wounded pilot.
