- Affenpinscher. The American Kennel Club classifies the affenpinscher as a toy group dog for its small 10-pound size and 11-inch stature. It was bred to dispatch rats and other vermin.
- Rottweiler. The Rottweiler, or Rottie as it's often known, is a descendant of ancient Roman cattle dogs, but has had many service jobs over the centuries, including work as guard dogs, search-and-rescue dogs, and service dogs.
- Belgian Sheepdog. Intelligent and watchful, the beautiful Belgian sheepdog is also named the Groenendael for a place in Brussels. Of the four related Belgian sheepherding breeds (the others are the Belgian Malinois, the Belgian Laekenois, and the Belgian Tervuren), the Belgian sheepdog is the only one that solely comes in black.
- Newfoundland. The majestic Newfoundland is massive but also known as a gentle giant that is usually great with children. A working dog, Newfies were used by Canadian fishermen to perform water rescues in icy waters.

- Show black dog breeds some love. Out of all the many dog breeds that there are in the world, black dog breeds have a special place in our hearts. These cuties tend to have soulful brown eyes and cute little black noses, and who can resist a pink tongue lolling out of a sweet black doggo’s mouth after a run in the park?
- Belgian Sheepdog. This gorgeous continental herder only comes in black, or occasionally in black and white, making them one of the best black dog breeds.
- Black Russian Terrier. If this furry fellow reminds you of a Giant Schnauzer, a Newfoundland, or an Airedale Terrier, you’d be correct. Specially bred in the 1930s from all of those breeds (and more!)
- Schipperke. The only other dog that only comes in black, the little Shippy has a sweet, foxy little face, a thick black coat, and a curious and confident personality.
- Miniature Pinscher. Highlights: Proud, Brave, Lively. The Miniature Pinscher has been appropriately nicknamed the “King of Toys” because of their dignified and courageous demeanor.
- Affenpinscher. Highlights: Brave, Positive, Comical. The Affenpinscher is the toy variation of the Pinscher group. However, they don’t look like your average Doberman or Miniature Pinscher.
- Schipperke. Highlights: Confident, Alert, Obedient. Originating from rural regions of Belgium, the Schipperke is a small black dog that made its name as a top barge (or ship) dog from hundreds of years ago.
- Jagdterrier. Highlights: Active, Lively, Independent. The Jagdterrier is a German terrier that few have heard of, probably because of the pronunciation of their name.
