Former buffalo hunter and entrepreneur Wyatt Earp arrives in the lawless cattle town of Wichita Kansas. His skill as a gun-fighter make him a perfect candidate for Marshal but he refuses the job until he feels morally obligated to bring law and order to this wild town.
In 1874, Clint Wallace and his foreman, Ben Thompson, are driving their cattle from Texas to Wichita, Kansas, the new trail head of the West, when they meet lone rider Wyatt Earp. The taciturn Wyatt relates that he wants to start a business in Wichita, to which the railroad has just come, and rejects Wallace's job offer.
After a group of drunken trail riders runs amok, Mayor Andrew Hope (Carl Benton Reid) of Wichita, Kan., recruits the intrepid Wyatt Earp (Joel McCrea) to end lawlessness.
