The film is the second German movie to portray the Battle of Stalingrad.

This is a superb film that pulls no punches as to the horrors of war no matter what side you're on, it certainly puts the Saving Private Ryans to shame for the sheer reality and brutality of war. One reviewer recommended Enemy At The Gates over this and I must disagree strongly with this.
