Bill Johnson (William Bendix) is a former ballplayer who loves baseball and hates umpires. But when a sustained period of unemployment leaves him desperate for a job, his father-in-law (Ray Collins), a former umpire himself, compels Bill to go to umpire school. Bill hates it at first, but gradually comes to appreciate the umpire's role in the game.
