Edward, initially unaware of this, falls in love with a patient named Eliza Graves (played by Kate Beckinsale), who is believed to be suffering from hysteria. Eliza reveals the truth to Edward, and he is faced with a moral dilemma: should he help the imprisoned staff or side with the patients?
A new employee at a mental hospital becomes attracted to one of his colleagues, but he is unaware of a recent, horrifying change in staff.
