Eline Vere is a neurotic young woman with a turbulent family. Eline is the victim of the narrow-mindedness which permeated The Hague at the beginning of the 19th century. In this film Kümel opposes magnificent images of the stiff, snow-covered Hague with colorful, vivid Brussels.
Adaptation of Louis Couperus' novel Eline Vere. This melodramatic film follows Eline Vere, as she attempts to break free from the confines of her narrow existence in The Hague through three tumultuous and ultimately disastrous courtships.
Running time: 132 min. Eline Vere is a 1991 Dutch film directed by Harry Kümel, based on the 1889 novel with the same title by Louis Couperus. The film was selected as the Dutch entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 64th Academy Awards, but was not accepted as a nominee.
