After years of absence, Charley Jr. (Peter Strauss) brings his wife and child to the ranch on which he grew up, hoping to reconcile with his mortally ill father (Charlton Heston). But Charley Sr. is still rankled by his son's pacifism, and the two argue constantly. Moreover, it seems the father has been publicly ridiculing his son for years, because whenever Jr.'s family goes into town they are shunned by the populace. As time runs out, the men struggle with each other and with themselves.
