United States. The Confederate States of America ( CSA ), commonly referred to as the Confederate States ( C.S. ), the Confederacy, or the South, was an unrecognized breakaway [1] republic in the Southern United States that existed from February 8, 1861, to May 9, 1865. [8]
The American Civil War (April 12, 1861 – May 26, 1865; also known by other names) was a civil war in the United States between the Union ("the North") and the Confederacy ("the South"). The Confederacy had been formed by states that had seceded from the Union.

Under Lee the Confederates claimed victories in the Seven Days’ Battles (June–July 1862), in the Battle of Fredericksburg (December 1862), and in the Battle of Chancellorsville (April–May 1863). President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. This order declared that slaves in the Confederate states were free.
