A Woman in Berlin (German: Eine Frau in Berlin) is a memoir by German journalist Marta Hillers, originally released anonymously in 1954. The identity of Hillers as the author was not revealed until 2003, after her death.
In the waning days of World War II, an assortment of women, children and elderly men struggle to survive in Berlin, cast out of their formerly middle-class lives. The Soviet Red Army arrives, defeating the last German defense. Its soldiers rape women of any age as they occupy the city.
A nameless woman keeps a diary as the Russians invade Berlin in the spring of 1945. She is in her early 30s, a patriotic journalist with international credentials; her husband, Gerd, a writer, is an officer at the Russian front.
Adopted from an anonymous writers experience during the last major offensive in Europe, A Woman In Berlin recounts a daily record of one woman's indefinite life during this bloody battle and eventual Soviet occupation.
