November 13, 1959. Perry Smith (Robert Blake), a dwarfish, dreamy, soft-spoken man of Cherokee Indian and Dutch descent has been paroled from prison for the past few months. He's on a Greyhound Bus drifting from an unknown location to Kansas City, Missouri and strumming his guitar.
