Mar 10, 2021 · When live ants see a dead ant, they carry their dead bodies out of the carpenter ant nest and get rid of it in the midden. The midden is a pile. It is like a dumpster which also acts as an ant cemetery.
Ants will carry dead ants away to ensure the colony is safe from contamination. Since a dead ant releases oleic acid after two days, ants will only discover the dead bodies during this time. A specialized worker called an “undertaker” are the one who transports corpses to their midden.
