  4. Sep 16, 2011 · "Straw Dogs" is as raw, interesting, and powerful as it's original. A film that deals with aggression, manhood, and human connections pushed to the extremes. There are many subtleties in the performances and some great metaphorical images. A great thriller that literally intensifies until it's satisfying climax. Best film I've seen in months.

The Criterion Collection regains the rights to Sam Peckinpah’s Straw Dogs, presenting a brand new Blu-ray edition featuring a 1080p/24hz high-definition presentation taken from a new 4K restoration scanned from the original 35mm negative. The film is also presented in the aspect ratio of 1.85:1 as opposed to Criterion’s original DVD’s 1.78:1 ratio....

The Blu-ray also offers an audio improvement with this new lossless PCM 1.0 monaural track. Dialogue has decent fidelity and I found the overall presentation a bit more dynamic. The music that pops up during the film is managed a bit better and I didn’t find it overly harsh or edgy here. Some effects still come off a bit flat and detached but those...

Criterion’s previous DVD special edition was a pretty great edition, looking into the film’s making, director Sam Peckinpah’s career, while also tackling the controversies that still surround the film to this day. It was a solid set of features. Thankfully most of that material has been ported over to this new edition with some new material added o...

I thought Criterion’s previous, long out-of-print DVD was a terrific edition in its own right but this new one improves upon that one on every level, with superb picture, improved audio, and some wonderful, insightful supplements. Undoubtedly worth the upgrade. BUY AT:
