- 1:17Why is Julian Assange flying to the remote island of Saipan?Reuters VideosSTORY: It's known for its idyllic sandy beaches, and now a major U.S. espionage court case. WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is heading to the tiny Pacific island of Saipan. His appearance at a courtroom there could end his 14-year legal saga. Assange is expected to plead guilty to a single criminal charge in a deal that will allow him to return home to Australia. :: Where is Saipan? Saipan is the capital of the Northern Mariana Islands, a U.S. Commonwealth in the western Pacific. Like Guam and Puerto Rico, the group of 14 islands are part of the U.S. but without full state status. The roughly 51,000 residents are U.S. citizens but cannot vote in presidential elections. :: Why is Assange heading there? Some Northern Mariana Islands, like Saipan, host U.S. district courts. Prosecutors say Assange wanted to go to a court close to his home of Australia but not on the continental U.S.. Here's the governor of the Northern Mariana Islands Arnold Palacios. :: Arnold Palacios, Northern Mariana Islands Governor “There’s less potential for a lot of chaos with the press, and press coverage and all that. So, they wanted to get this done efficiently, and get it done in a U.S. court.”13 hours ago

- 1:25VP Harris targets Trump on abortion ruling anniversaryReuters VideosSTORY: :: Kamala Harris takes aim at Donald Trump's role in the Supreme Court's abortion decision :: June 24, 2024 :: Phoenix, Arizona "Two years ago today, the highest court in our land took a constitutional right that had been recognized, from the people of America, from the women of America. And thereafter, in state after state laws have been proposed and passed that criminalize health care providers. You know, in Texas, they provide prison for life." "And so let's understand the connection between this issue and the elections. Because Joe Biden has been very clear, when Congress puts back in place the protections of Roe versus Wade, he will sign it into law." "You know, the people who were the leaders of this movement that got Roe to be the law of the land for 50 years, they have passed the baton to us. And the question is now, while we are carrying the baton, what are we doing with it? And I know we are taking our role and responsibilities seriously." "There are going to be many times in your life where you're going to be told that can't be done. It's never been done before. It's not time. They're not ready for it. And then this is the one I love. It's going to be a lot of hard work. Don't you listen? I eat no for breakfast."1 day ago
- 2:02Don't vote with your portfolio -wealth advisorReuters VideosSTORY: With the highly-charged election between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump approaching, von Lipsey said many investors may be trying to reposition their portfolios based on "guesses about whether tariffs will be increased" or whether "renewable energy will suddenly fall out of favor." But trying to predict the election's outcome - and how Trump or Biden's policies may affect their holdings - is a losing game, von Lipsey said. "We just won't have the clarity with which to make an investment decision headed into the election until perhaps after the election is over," he explained. Using the 2020 and 2016 elections as examples, von Lipsey said "there was a huge differentiation between what investors and the market thought going into the election and what actually happened in the markets [afterward]."1 day ago

- 1:56AI Weekly: Nvidia on top, Apple held backReuters VideosSTORY: From yet another record for Nvidia, to Apple hitting a snag in Europe, this is AI Weekly. Nvidia became the world’s most valuable firm, at least for a while. The AI chip champion overtook Microsoft, with a market value of over $3.3 trillion. Though the Windows maker later regained top spot, it’s all another sign of Nvidia’s relentless rise, with its stock price up over 150% just this year. Apple is delaying the launch of some AI products in Europe, and it’s blaming EU rules. The bloc requires it to ensure rival products and services can function with its devices. Separately, media reports say Apple is also talking to Facebook parent Meta about integrating its AI model. TikTok owner ByteDance is working with U.S. chip designer Broadcom on an AI processor to power its products. Reuters sources say the move would comply with Washington’s export controls, and secure an adequate supply of silicon for the social network. AI is running for parliament, sort of. Businessman Steve Endacott is standing in Britain's general election - with an AI-chatbot to do the talking for him. “Hi, I’m AI Steve, standing to be MP for Brighton and Hove. I’d love to hear what policies you’d like me to adopt.” Watchdogs say if Endacott wins, it will be the human, not the bot, that takes a seat. And OpenAI’s co-founder is starting his own firm. Ilya Sutskever says it will focus solely on making a model that is safe for humanity. He left OpenAI after playing a central role in the drama over the firing and rehiring of boss Sam Altman last year.2 days ago

- 1:48Billboard comparing Trump to Fidel Castro sparks debateReuters VideosSTORY: A Spanish-language billboard in Miami, Florida featuring Donald Trump and former Cuban leader Fidel Castro has generated significant debate in the lead up to the 2024 U.S. presidential election… The ad, which translates in English to “No to dictators, no to Trump" was installed by Mad Dog PAC, and is part of a campaign targeting battleground states to raise concerns about a potential dictatorship. “I thought, what better place to try to provoke a little conversation than Miami?” Claude Taylor, the chair of Mad Dog PAC, says the aim of the billboard is to alert the Cuban-American community to the risks of authoritarianism, drawing comparisons to 1959 Cuba. “I firmly believe that Donald Trump wants to be a dictator. And so if I'm speaking to a Cuban-American audience, it seems pretty obvious to me to make the comparison. I think it's an apt comparison. [FLASH] I'm opposed to dictatorships. I don't like them, I like democracy. And one of the tenants of democracy is free expression.” Local Trump supporters have criticized the billboard and rejected the comparison. JOHN: “You know, whatever you do to Trump backfires. Now he's getting free publicity and it's going to the Cuban community...” MAURICIO ECHEVERRY: "Oh, no, that, that. You can't compare Fidel Castro to Trump because it's not the same thing. Trump is not a communist. Well, I voted for Trump. I'm going to vote for him again." The billboard highlights the intense discussion expected in the upcoming CNN debate in Atlanta, as Trump and current President Joe Biden are neck and neck in national opinion polls, with a considerable slice of the electorate still undecided five months before the Nov. 5 vote.3 days ago

- 0:40UK's Sunak 'angry' about election betting claimsReuters VideosSTORY: :: June 20, 2024 :: York, United Kingdom :: Pictures from BBC news :: UK's Rishi Sunak says he's 'angry' over alleged election betting by his own party members :: Rishi Sunak, British Prime Minister :: "Well, like you, I was incredibly angry, incredibly angry to learn of these allegations. It's a really serious matter. It's right that they're being investigated properly by the relevant law enforcement authorities, including, as Fiona said, a criminal investigation by the police. And I want to be crystal clear that if anyone has broken the rules, they should face the full force of the law. And that's what those investigations are there to do. And I hope that they do their work as quickly and thoroughly as possible." :: "But what I can tell you is if anyone is found to have broken the rules, not only should they face the full consequences of the law, I will make sure that they are booted out of the Conservative Party." On another chaotic day for the governing Conservatives, the party's campaign director took a leave of absence, linked to an investigation around bets being placed on the timing of the vote before it was announced. The allegations that a second Conservative candidate was being investigated by Britain's gambling regulator and may have attempted to profit from their political knowledge of the timing of the election is the latest setback in Sunak's faltering efforts to stay in Downing Street.5 days ago

- 1:24Bank of England keeps rates at 5.25%Reuters VideosSTORY: The Bank of England kept its main interest rate unchanged on Thursday (June 19). It stays at a 16-year high of 5.25% ahead of an election on July 4. But some policymakers said their decision not to cut was now "finely balanced." The central bank's main committee voted 7-2 to keep rates on hold. Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey said it was "good news" the latest data had shown inflation was back at its 2% target. But he reiterated it was too soon to cut rates as the bank needed to make sure inflation will stay low. The Bank said indicators of inflation persistence - mainly wage growth and services inflation - had moderated since its May meeting, but remained high. Big services price inflation and rapid wage growth also meant it was too soon to cut rates for some on the Bank's voting Committee. Markets have heavily priced in a first quarter-point cut by September's meeting. Any cut is likely to be too late for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Hit Conservative Party is around 20 points behind the opposition Labour Party in the pre-election polls. Sunak has sought credit for the fall in inflation since he took office in October two years ago, when inflation was at a 41-year high of 11.1%. But Labour blames high mortgage rates on economic mismanagement by the Conservatives' previous leader, Liz Truss. The central bank said the upcoming election had no impact on its decision.6 days ago

- 1:55Polish hospital fined for denying legal abortionReuters VideosSTORY: :: File Polish authorities have fined a hospital for denying an abortion to a woman whose pregnancy may have endangered her life. It marks a shift in the country with some of the strictest termination rules in Europe. :: October 2020 The country’s previous nationalist government introduced a near-total ban on abortion in 2021. They were only allowed in cases of rape, incest or threat to the woman’s health or life - but even then - doctors could still refuse to perform them on moral grounds. The issue has sparked massive protests in recent years. In 2023, women’s rights were front and center in the election campaign that ushered in a pro-European coalition government. It recently introduced a regulation to penalize publicly funded medical centers that refuse legal procedures. At the Foundation for Women and Family Planning in Warsaw, Antonina Lewandowska explains what happened in this case, to the 41-year-old woman who was 14 weeks pregnant: “The woman presented a certificate from a psychiatrist, which clearly stated that continuing this pregnancy was a threat to health or life. And this is a sufficient legal basis to terminate the pregnancy.” :: File The hospital requested more documentation and ultimately refused to perform the abortion. The woman ended up getting it at a different hospital. That was unlawful, according to Poland’s National Health Fund... which fined the hospital nearly $137,000. LEWANDOWSKA: “The aggrieved person contacted us as a foundation and informed us about the situation." // "…we think this is the first of many wins. We currently have a dozen or so cases that are pending before the patient ombudsman or have already been won. It is the beginning or signal of some upcoming change.” :: File The medical center plans to appeal the decision. The country’s health minister has warned there could be additional penalties coming at other facilities.6 days ago
