The Chechako is a 1914 American drama silent film directed by Hobart Bosworth, starring Jack Conway, Myrtle Stedman, Joe Ray and Gordon Sackville. It is based on the 1912 novel Smoke Bellew by Jack London.
Cheechako is a Chinook jargon term from the Pacific Northwest region of North America. Historically, Cheechakos referred to those who had recently arrived at a mining community in Alaska or the Yukon. Today, the term applies to anyone who has recently transplanted to Alaska.

Jan 14, 2009 · Houston, Texas. A “cheechako,” also spelled checaco and cheechalko, is pronounced chee-CHAH-koh. The term means tenderfoot, greenhorn or newcomer. Apparently, the word is of Chinook origin, and it was used during the Alaska gold rush (and it is still used by some Alaskans today).
