Londinium, modern day London was the capital of Roman Britain during most of the period of Roman rule. It was originally a settlement established on the current site of the City of London around AD 47–50.
Londinium was a Roman settlement founded in AD 43 on the banks of the Thames River. The Roman settlement corresponds to the modern-day city of London. Initially established as a trading hub, it served as the capital of Roman Britain for over 350 years.
Work began in around 90AD and took 30 years to complete. Larger in area than the present St. Paul’s Cathedral it was the biggest north of the Alps, dominating the skyline of the town. Londinium was clearly being planned at that time as one of the greatest cities of the empire.
