Viewed on its own, this show is okay. Without knowing the back story it may well be hard to pick up large chunks of the storyline but I suspect with no previous knowledge of the original or book, the story, characters and acting are all reasonable.

The Thorn Birds: The Missing Years is a 1996 CBS miniseries directed by Kevin James Dobson. Adapted from the 1977 novel The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough , it tells the story of the nineteen years between Dane's birth and Ralph's return to Australia.

It was off putting at first to see a new cast with different accents (Meggie sounded American and now she’s totally Australian), but it’s not so bad.
