His father was a brother of Matthew Stewart, earl of Lennox and regent 1570–1. He held the seigniory of Aubigny in France, to which his son succeeded in 1567.
Through his grandmother, the Duchess of Portsmouth (d. 1734), the 2nd Duke inherited the French estate of Aubigny (divided among members of the family in the 1830s). The Sussex estate, beginning with a small purchase in 1695, was greatly enlarged by the 3rd Duke between 1750 and 1806.
