Caleb, in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament), one of the spies sent by Moses from Kadesh in southern Palestine to reconnoiter the land of Canaan. Only Caleb and Joshua advised the Hebrews to proceed immediately to take the land, and Caleb was rewarded with the promise that he should possess it.
CALEB kā ləb (כָּלֵ֖ב, dog, i.e., slave), son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, one of the spies sent to survey the land of Canaan (Num 13; 14). The name is thought by some to go back to totemistic origins. It may rather speak of a man with canine qualities: the rabid one, biting, snarling.

Caleb (in hebrew, “ Kalev ”) was one of the most prominent and influential Jews to leave Egypt. A leader of the tribe of Judah, he was one of the 12 spies Moses sent to reconnoiter the Land of Israel, and later one of two sent by Joshua to scout out the city of Jericho. His is a tale of bravery, piety, and above all, loyalty.
He represents the tribe of Judah as its prince ( Numbers 13:6; compare Numbers 13:2 ). While the majority of the men sent out by Moses bring back evil report, Caleb and Hoshea, or Joshua, the son of Nun, are the only ones to counsel the invasion of the promised land ( Numbers 13:30; Numbers 14:6 ).
According to the commandment of the Lord to Joshua, he gave to Caleb the son of Jephunneh a portion among the people of Judah, Kiriath-arba, that is, Hebron (Arba was the father of Anak). And Caleb drove out from there the three sons of Anak, Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai, the descendants of Anak.
