Anna “Bamie” Roosevelt Cowles was born on January 18, 1855. She was the oldest child of Theodore and Martha “Mittie” Bulloch Roosevelt, and sister to Theodore Roosevelt. Anna went by many names including “Bamie” (short for bambina) given to her by her mother, and Bye which she was called by her siblings and many nieces and nephews.
