It was initially the largest and most representative building of the Austro-Hungarian period in Sarajevo and served as the city hall. The building was reopened on 9 May 2014. It is the current seat and headquarters of the Mayor of Sarajevo, as well as the Sarajevo City Council.
In the night between August 25 and 26, 1992, City hall was hit by flammable artillery missiles. The fire destroys the City Hall, together with the huge library fund of the National-University Library of about 2 million units.
