Christian Nees von Esenbeck was a German physician, botanist, embryologist, natural scientist, natu‐ral philosopher, writer, politician, and member of parliament. He was the XI. President of the Leo‐poldina.
He was cofounder of a successful health insurance scheme. In 1845 he became the beloved leader (“Father Nees”) of a community of “Christian Catholics” following J. Ronge. This radical movement soon aroused the active opposition of the state.
