The Mississippi State Capitol or the “New Capitol,” has been the seat of the state’s government since it succeeded the old statehouse in 1903. Located in Jackson, it was designated as a Mississippi Landmark in 1986, a National Historic Landmark in 2016 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1969.

The State Capitol is the third capitol constructed in Jackson. The first building was completed in 1822 and no longer stands. The second building was completed in 1839, served as the Capitol until 1903, and today is the Old Capitol Museum.

The Old Capitol is Mississippi's most historic building. Built in 1839, it was the site of some of the state's most significant legislative actions, such as the passage of the 1839 Married Women's Property Act, Mississippi's secession from the Union in 1861, and the crafting of the 1868 and 1890 state constitutions.
A systems overhaul and restoration of the public spaces lasted from 1979 to 1982. Oversight since 1999 by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History’s Curator of the Capitol has helped maintain the capitol’s architectural integrity and beauty. The building was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2016.
