Absalom (Hebrew: אַבְשָׁלוֹם ʾAḇšālōm, "father of peace") was the third son of David, King of Israel with Maacah, daughter of Talmai, King of Geshur. 2 Samuel 14:25 describes him as the handsomest man in the kingdom. Absalom eventually rebelled against his father and was killed during the Battle of Ephraim's Wood.

Absalom raised the standard of revolt at Hebron, the old capital of Judah, now supplanted by Jerusalem. The revolt was at first completely successful; David fled from his capital over the Jordan to Mahanaim in Gilead, and Absalom occupied Jerusalem.

After spending three years in exile in Geshur for killing his half-brother Amnon (who had raped Absalom’s sister Tamar - see 2 Samuel 13:1-38), Absalom was brought back to Jerusalem by David’s general, Joab (see 2 Samuel 14:23).
