- Johnny Ringo’s dad shot himself by accident. John Peters Ringo was born on May 3, 1850 in Wayne County, Indiana. According to Casey Tefertiller, at age 14, Ringo’s parents decided to move west to California.
- Johnny Ringo was charismatic. Ringo and his family completed the journey west to California and settled in San Jose. At this point, Ringo fell out of the historic record only to reemerge around 1874 in the Texas Hill country.
- Johnny Ringo was a cowboy, but not in the normal sense. After Ringo moved to Texas, he met a renegade Texas Ranger named Scott Cooley. Together they became took part in the intermittent feuding between German and non-German settlers in the region, which became known as the Mason County War, or the Hoodoo War.

He showed up first in Mason county, Texas , in 1875, where he was suspected of cattle rustling and arrested for a double murder.
